Enjoy very much this great video of Arthur Benjamin, a “mathemagician” at a Ted Conference. Great fun and funny stuff.

Arthur Benjamin makes numbers dance. In his day job, he’s a professor of math at Harvey Mudd College; in his other day job, he’s a “Mathemagician,” taking the stage in his tuxedo to perform high-speed mental calculations, memorizations and other astounding math stunts. It’s part of his drive to teach math and mental agility in interesting ways, following in the footsteps of such heroes as Martin Gardner.

by Alejandro

I’ve recently started to analyze a new business venture in the field of IT with a good friend of mine, and now partner, based in Silicon Valley. The fact that he’s located in the US and I’m in Chile, makes this business opportunity viable considering that our operations would be ran from Chile and the US simultaneously and coordinately. Given the fact I can currently work only part time on this project, because I have a job at a business I founded with other partners a few years ago, I don’t have a lot of extra time to invest in this project at this early stage. My friend is in a similar situation, so we’re faced with having to develop this project on a part time, bi-hemisphere basis. So, how are we supposed to develop a serious business effort thousands of miles away, with not a lot of time? Thanks to some business know-how and wiki technology, very easily indeed.

It has been amazing to realize how in less than 3 hours, all of the the necessary business documentation was born and well on its way to a successful and complete development through only 4 documents hosted in Google Docs and Spreadsheets, the free most accessible wiki service around town.

If you are not sure of what a wiki is, make sure to watch this great 3 minute video introduction to wikis, from our friends at ZDNET and then continue reading this post under the video player:

posted with vodpod

To get started with the business analysis, I was supposed to generate a couple of documents which would help us start this effort effectively and then send them to my partner. A few years back, I would have instantly launched an Excel or Word document, but instead I launched my Google Docs and Spreadsheets Home Page, where I knew I could create online documents and share them with my partner, possible investors and any other future collaborators in the US and anywhere else in the world. Always the latest version, always online, total collaboration. The 4 documents I created to get the biz to a power start are:

1. Business Bio (Text Document)

2. Business Gantt Chart (Spreadsheet)

3. Business SWOT Analysis (Spreadsheet)

4. Business Cash Flow (Spreadsheet)

If you’ve ever created or planned to create a new business you’ll agree that as an entrepreneur you should always develop and use tools like business plans, financial analysis, market studies among many other things to make the launching process as smooth as possible. I’m sure the Gantt Chart (2) , SWOT Analysis (3) and Cash Flow (4) ring a bell and can be created your own way. On the other hand, if we concentrate on the Business Bio (1), in our case, it includes different sections that will allow us to get a clear idea on the identity of the business from (nearly) every perspective:

a) Objectives of the Business: What do we do? Here we describe our business, its products and/or services.

b) Barriers to Entry?: What walls are there before we get in the field? Are there any quality certifications, special regulations, etc.?

c) Market (Potential Clients): Who do we sell to? Identify our clients (direct & indirect), market/s, size, segments, niches, etc.

d) Competitors: Who do we go against? Who are the kings and queens of the field? Who would be playing in our same level?

e) Business Model/s: How do we operate, sell, buy, get paid, pay commissions or rebates?

f) The Players: Who do we work with? Who’s on our ecosystem?: How will the company be conformed (personnel, partners, investors, key strategic partners (people & companies), suppliers, etc).

g) Capital: How much is the tab? How are we going to finance this venture? How big a share of the company are we willing to sell to capitalize?

h) Mission: Who do we want to be? How will we accomplish it? How would we like to be and be perceived in terms of objectives, processes, quality, people, satisfaction, values, sustainability?

i) Vision – Where do we want to be in 2, 5, 10 years?: It never hurts to dream, especially when you think you have the right plan to get there. This is one of the very fun parts of entrepreneurship.

j) Name of the Business: And our name is… (all name proposals must be accompanied by an available web domain dot com, .net, .it, .info, .cl, .whatever).

k) Literature: Informational links that complement the research and contents of this document and overall business analysis.

Now remember, nothing’s ever final in 2.0. In the age of collaboration and participation, things are in the eternal “Beta”, always evolving and improving thanks to the continuous feedback made available to and by all of the individuals in the team. I’m sure that as we enter and analyze content, we’ll edit, add to, delete and move around information. It will probably become the Business Plan itself, where we will probably add to all the data gathered in the Gantt Chart, Cash Flow and SWOT Analysis. Fairly simple to keep track of won’t you say?

I’m sure I’ve missed some or many points regarding launching a business right, but I feel confident this 4 document, under 3 hour effort will get us on the right path.

What other key points do you think I missed? Would you use this approach to evaluate a real business opportunity? Thank you for providing feedback in the comments section.

In this, Part 2 of a series of tips and tricks to help us become effective and fluent computer users and internauts, I’m moving into surfing, archiving and retrieving web pages, one of the most frequent and probable uses for Internet “administration”.

2. Get into Social Bookmarking to Organize, Expand and Retrieve Your Own Web
OK, you’ve downloaded one, some or all of the nice browsers I recommended on a previous post and feel ready to go to the Internet to do some research, e-mail, RSS feed reading or simply surf away, expecting to find and learn something new, cool, strange or even unexpected. As we surf the web over time, we come across hundreds and even thousands of websites that we may want to save hoping to go back to them sometime in the future. Bookmarking a website for later referral is one of the ways we can take hold of the web and its contents, thus creating some sort of “own” web.

Saving to “favorites” with the button on top of your browser was unfortunately the only solution we had for a long time. The problem with the classic favorites was that when the number of web pages and/or folders saved grew to a high number, it became more and more difficult to later find the saved web pages you were looking for. Another problem would be if we were at our home computer and realized that the bookmark we were looking for was at the office computer or at another computer somewhere else. How many times did you loose all of your bookmarks saved in favorites after switching computers, installing or re-installing an OS? Sure there were ways to back-up the favorite files to install them in another computer, but the very essence of it, the saving and retrieving method just didn’t work. When you save files, folders and/or bookmarks, you want to make sure you will be able to find it again without great effort and in almost no time.

Thanks to social bookmarking, we’ve been able to solve the previously mentioned problems. With social bookmarking, instead of saving and placing the bookmarks within a specific browser inside a specific computer, we are saving them online. With social bookmarking, we can access the bookmarks we’ve saved from any computer in the world with access to Internet. And it’s thanks to tagging, that we are able to retrieve them, even years later, with just a keyword or compound keyword search. It’s truly amazing how fast and effectively we can find a website we saved no matter how long ago by looking for the right tag or tags.

There are multiple free bookmarking services, you have delicious, stumbleupon, magnolia, diigo and many others and they are and work similarly (except for stumbleupon, which has this great added benefit of installing buttons on your browser to ramdomly come across -or “stumble upon” new web sites depending on you interests).

My preferred service for social bookmarking is delicious, probably the first or earliest major social bookmarking service that came about, had success and got a massive number of users. I currently have 1,959 web pages saved in my delicious account with 2,529 tags and I must say it has worked perfectly almost all the time. It will depend on how precise you are when assigning tags to a web page you are saving, and how precisely you remember the tag or tags associated to the web page you are looking for.

With social bookmarking, you are also allowed to share the bookmarks you have. For example, I can invite you to review my delicious bookmarks by giving you the url to my bookmarks (www.delicious.com/flexjandro), accepting you into “my network”, and vice versa, or you can surf what thousands of users have saved by visiting delicious’ home page, popular, or recent. It’s really incredible what we can find and come across when we are surfing the delicious web site. You can obviously run searches using tags, whichwill target the results. If you would like to share a specific web site with someone in particular, you can send the link while you tag and save it. And if you care to have a little more privacy on the contents you are archiving, you can save it as private, which means it will not be shared with anyone viewing your bookmarks.

All you have to do to be up and running with social bookmarking, is: 1: get an account with the social bookmarking service you choose, and 2: install the “tag” and “my bookmarks” buttons on your browsers. Start enjoying the process of saving and retrieving bookmarks with social bookmarking.

Tell us about your own experience bookmarking. Do you still use favorites? Are there any other services or method you would like to recommend? Tell us in the comments section.

Throughout this blog, I’ll be also sharing video insights from some of the world’s greatest thinkers and doers who gather yearly at the TED Conference. You’ll be inspired and thrilled to watch and listen to these great minds, who are always on the front of innovation on different fields.

This talk reflects the clear weakness educational systems around the world have when it comes down to fostering, nurturing and pushing creativity on students. This video is a great inspirational example of the type of thinking we need to bring about concerning education and creativity. Do you think schools kill creativity? What can we do to improve this aspect of education? Tell us on the comments section.

Depending on the type of work you may be on, you may see or think about creativity in different ways. Whatever it is, and whatever the field we are in, we need to create and come up with ideas constantly, both on our personal and professional lives. Or so we should.

When we are looking for ideas about our next new blog post, marketing campaign or strategic planning objectives, to name a few, and we are experiencing some type of “writer’s block” or lack of concentration and ideas, get yourself out of the issue and go look for more input. It may be to start reading your RSS feeds, random wikipedia articles, or an online newspaper, watch videos in Youtube or simply go through the pages of a magazine on top of your desk. As we start absorbing input of various types and intensities, our creative mind, concerned about an underlying problem (the idea for a new blog post, marketing campaign or strategic planning objectives) gathers data and associates it with the different mental elements available for this process and is able to usually come up with gratifying solutions. Channeling specific types of input appropriately towards expected types of output can also be a key inspiring factor.

It’s no secret that in order to get better output you need better input, for more varied output, more varied input; as we go about searching, researching, learning and absorbing more information and ideas, we’ll get to a point of contstant creativity and high quality output.

What About you? What do you do to overcome creative block? How do you improve your output? Tell us in the comments sections.

When it comes to improving our computer experience, there’s nothing better than learning as many tricks as possible that can be easily implemented by the average user. If you are one of those people who like to learn tips and tricks about computers, this series of posts is for you. Instead of trying the typical “Top 10 Tricks and Techniques” type of article, in one article, I’ve chosen a “Series” type of approach, which will allow me the necessary time to think about each next recommendation I’ll write about. Let’s look then, at my favorite tricks and techniques for an optimum computer experience:

1. Use all 5 Great Browsers to Surf the Web

I hope that by now, you are aware that the “little blue e” icon on your desktop doesn’t mean Internet, it only means access to Internet. The “blue e” is called Explorer, and it’s Microsoft’s browser. Browsers are used to access the Internet, and if you think it’s the only browser out there, think again. The fact that Microsoft happens to load with its OS and software about 92% of the computers in the world, and they happen to install only THEIR browser, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t other ways to access the Net. There are in fact over 10 browsers available today with which you can access the Internet. But I’m only gonna talk about my favorite 5. But, Why use all 5? My answer: If you were given the choice of owning and driving 5 great cars, would you prefer to drive just one car, the car you were given the first time? Each browser has its own appeal and characteristics that make them unique, and after you download them and start using, you will soon find out which one fits your browsing style better than the other one for different tasks. And remember that you can have all 5 browsers -or more, installed in your computer all the time. The following, are the 5 best browsers, in my order of preference. Kind of (I really like them all).

I Opera:
This Norwegian beauty includes the best zooming capabilities if compared with all the other browsers. Whenever you are going visual on your browsing (Photos, videos and graphics, for example), use Opera; you’ll be surprised of the zooming magic “Ctrl+mouse wheel” has on most sites you visit. It loads fast, looks good and provides an incredibly friendly and easy to use RSS feed reader. Even though it’s my favorite browser, I don’t use it as often as I could, mainly due to the fact I still have 4 other browsers to use. Let’s say it’s like the Ferrari in my garage which I don’t take out to drive all the time, given the fact I also own 4 other cars. You get the drift, right? For an in depth review of Opera, go here.

II Firefox:
Mozilla Firefox is very special because it was the first browser that started making a dent in Explorer’s Market Share. To give you an idea of its popularity among experts, the market share for average users is about 70% Explorer and 13% Firefox, but among computer savvy users, Firefox has a pounding 75% of market share, over Explorer’s very insignificant 5% or less. One of the best characteristics of Firefox is the large number of add-ons that it’s able to have installed, which makes it extremely customizable to fit anyone’s needs. For an in depth review of Firefox, check out this.

III Flock
Another of my favorite browsers, Flock is also called “the social browser”. If you are into Facebook, Youtube, Flickr, Digg, WordPress, Delicious, StumbleUpon and/or other social networks, Flock is the one. With its amazingly useful sidebar and media bar, and given the fact it’s powered by Firefox, you can count on it being an extremely stable browser (yes, all browsers crash sometime). Beautiful, fast and social. Totally recommend it. If you want an in depth review of Flock, go here. Flock also works with most Firefox add-ons, which I must say, as browsers change version, don’t always continue to work.

IV Safari
Apple’s Safari browser was only recently launched for Windows, so we could say it’s just started to add followers. Besides having a fairly different look (not necessarily cute), if you compare it with all of the other browsers I’ve mentioned, it has similar functionality, good tab use, and it feels somewhat different to use. Yes, the Apple folks design weird UIs, I know. My main use, is with its Home Page set for El Mercurio, online version of the biggest, mainstream newspaper in Chile. It’s just great to launch Safari and have the newspaper open in front of your eyes. Setting different and specific Home pages in the different browsers is a good tip, by the way. In regards with the full on review, click here.
V Chrome

Google’s new toy in their (free) store of goodies comes at a time and moment in which we didn’t need another browser. No, I’m kidding. Nothing better than competition to spur innovation. The more competition, the more options and benefits us users obtain. Or so they say. Staying faithful with Google’s mission of controlling the universe, sorry, organizing all of the information, nothing better than a swift Google Browser that may interact perfectly with all of Google’s tools for world domination. One of the coolest things about Chrome, is it’s innovative tab design on the very top of the window. It opens very fast, it reloads tabs even faster, and it has the great feature of searching Google if you just type the query in the address bar. No more search bars to go look for. Let’s thanks the folks at Top Ten Reviews for providing this review for Chrome and all the other browsers. Here, you can find a Top Ten review for the most important browsers.

Oh, I’d forgotten about Explorer. I didn’t give you a review, or included it on my list of top browsers. Well, that’s because it’s not on my list of top browsers. All I have to say about Explorer, and most of you will want to to know, is that banking sites and similar websites work particularly well with Explorer. No wonder why the financial markets are aching so much. There’s 2 things I use Explorer for: 1: to download another browser when its the only browser pre-installed on a computer, and 2: To perform those painful banking transfers. Its painfully slow start, continues crashes and dangerously weak security, make me want to stay away from it. And no, I’m not a Microsoft basher, I am a somewhat knowledgeable user who’s not patient with slowness and “crashiness”.

Go out and drive those 5 FREE beauties that are waiting for you. And let us know about your experience in the comments section.

PD: One more thing. In case you care… whenever I talk about technology, I will ONLY talk and recommend FREE, totally FREE software/apps. And believe me, I will recommend you a lot of them.

by Alejandro

I was just chatting with a cousin of mine who lives in Concepción, in the south of Chile, and he was telling me about a social program he’s working on. It’s called “Quiero Mi Barrio” (I Love my Neighborhood). The objective of this program, which is financed by the Chilean Government, is to help young people and children at risk in lower income communities through different educational and sporting activities. Since my cousin participates in the PR and Organizing of the different activities of this program, we had been disscusing several weeks back about the possibility of me flying down for a week to teach a few classes on Basic Computer Literacy (pro-bono) to young people who are part of the program. As we discuss different possibilities in regards with contents, objectives, class lenghts and dates of travel, we find ourselves evolving into an interesting combination of topics that could help motivate these children and teenagers. The 3 topics we agree should be on my presentations, are the Internet, Entrepreneurship and Fitness, with a strong component of motivation and inspiration.

Internet
There’s no doubt the Internet and computer use is one of the most important tools an individual can have to help his/her intellectual, artistic and/or professional development. Providing these people with the key and basic elements of search, research, mediums (video, writing, audio), free Web 2.0 technologies and, let’s say creation, like MS Office, and Paint), along with clear and simple examples and recommendations that can make them relate to the contents easily, could be a good start on this Seminar.

Entrepreneurship
When we think about entrepreneurship, many different images and concepts go through our minds. Depending on one’s experience and perspective, we may think of 2 guys working on a garage, a Home Business or maybe a struggling business or successful corporation or business icon who may or may have not gone to College. But we can also think about microcredit or lower income entrepreneurship. According to a Harvard study, youth entrepreneurship programs can be very effective on keeping students from low-income environments on track with school and college, with the added benefit of helping them drive themselves toward goals, achievements and leadership.

Fitness
I know I’m not on the best shapes to be talking about fitness lately, but I still have the experience of about 10 years of hard training in the gym (weights), and training outdoors with different sports mostly between the ages of 20 and 30. Fitness changed my life, it helped me gain confidence and set goals. It helped me desire, plan and accomplish. I think it even kept me out of drugs and excessive partying. Fitness can help anybody be more healthy and self-respectful, it can help you focus better and even transmit skills to other areas of your life. I am a certified fitness instructor, and would certainly look forward to motivate these kids to start being more active, sharing with them the fulfillments that fitness brought to my life.

What started as a couple 90 minute Basic Computer Literacy classes, ended up being a 3 day, 18 hour Multi-Purpose Seminar on Internet, Entrepreneurship and Fitness that will hopefully make a really big difference on these people who strongly need the motivation to be and do better, to dream and to improve their lives and communities. I trully hope this innovation will make a difference. I will make sure to post when I’m teaching this Seminar in Concepción in a couple of months.

And you? What social innovation do you believe would make a difference with communities and young people in need? Let me know in the comments.

by Alejandro

I’ve recently started to develop (pro bono), a project which is related to High Performance Motorcycle Pilot Trainings for Bimota Motorcycles in Chile, which is where I purchased and service my motorcycle, and also take motorcycle pilot classes. Hobby excitement aside, and as I write contents into a presentation I have to make at Bimota in a few weeks, I’m thrilled with all of the ideas and improvements that I believe can be part of this “pumped up” Motorcycle Pilot Training. My objective here is to expand, organize and deepen the necessary theoretical, mechanical and practical contents of their Pilot Training, which includes some theoretical contents plus racetrack practice (not as often as I would like to, though). As a pilot myself, who recently attended one of their Pilot Trainings, I feel trully excited about the increased scope of effectiveness that an improved training could have on me and every other pilot-student. As they say: you can never be too safe on a motorbike.

There is a lot that can be done to make a product, service or methodology evolve, deliver more value to the user and provide the necessary value to meet the ultimate objectives. In my case: “To provide the necessary tools to make you an excellent pilot”. Fair, if you consider the potential outcome of a motorcycle accident. Personally, I believe it’s fairly simple to come up with innovative conceptual and specific ideas that can innovate an existing product, service and/or methodology. The idea of something being at a final “best” version or stage, is nearly impossible, in my opinion. It’s very typical for myself to be thinking all the time about new, innovative ways of providing such and so service or product. I thrive on imagining (and sometimes actually planning) new ideas where a business can improve the way they do things, or the attributes of the product they sell. All the way from a “corner shop” type of place to professional consulting in different fields, to a bigger business and/or corporation. A lot of innovation can occur at all levels and in all places. Innovation (of products and services) is just thinking from a different angle about this product or service. I’m sure that more than once you’ve dreamed a way to make this one store, service or company a more innovative business, with more value in their core objective. Innovation is hidden, but all around.

When was the last time you dreamt about an inovation of a product or service? Share your ideas and experiences in the comments below.

by Alejandro

If only we were able to organize, search and find physical, real books, magazines, newspapers, documents, files, photographs, videos and records in the same, potentially effective way that you can do it with digital mediums today, we would have started the current knowledge and information revolution decades ago.

It’s in organizing, searching and finding where things make a difference in this world of information. I guess Google’s mission to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” has a lot to do with what I’m talking about. One of the most relevant challenges that we have as information age individuals is to be able to organize, search and find the information we need just when we need it, and quickly. And and I’m not only talking about the Internet’s information, I’m also talking about our own information inside our own personal computers and networks. Information contained in different formats and with different attributes.

If you still haven’t realized of how ineffective the classic Windows search is to “find” your files in your own computer, you probably haven’t used it much. Maybe you are one of those quick “file directory explorers” that search and go through several, dozens, hundreds and even thousands of files and directories and folders and more sub-folders without major issues to find what you are looking for. When it comes to searching and finding in the Internet though, even if you consider yourself a fluent Google user, how many times do you go to the second, or even third page of search results? Do you think your search has been successful because you found some relevance in the first 10 results? Sure Google is great for search, but sure there must be a lot of good and relevant information buried under the first few dozen results. I almost feel like start talking about the deep web, but that’s a subject for another post.

You will only be able to manage your information and the world’s information in your own interest and benefit when you are aware and able to implement different techniques, tools and technologies available to help you reach this objective. The following, are just a few recommendations to a better search and find experience that I would like to highlight:

When searching locally, with your own files and computer, Google Desktop is hard to beat. The “suggest as you type” results box couldn’t be more accurate and swift. It’s trully amazing how fast and effectively finding files in our own computers has become with tools like this. Google Desktop not only shows results that reflect a match in query of written content on the name of the file, it also searches inside the documents for the search terms requested. Nothing better than the search magic of Ctrl-Ctrl (easy way to launch Google Desktop).

But let’s cut some slack to the folks of Microsoft. I’m currently on Windows Vista and must say that the search box located on the top right of the explorer windows works pretty well to search and find the files you are looking for, but only when it comes to matching the file name with the search you ran. If you are very sure of one or more words contained in the file name, the built-in search box of Vista works fast and well.

Perhaps it’s too late to start renaming our hundreds of files and folders in a search-friendly way, making sure to use the keywords and tags that will help us retrieve the document easily through search tools like the ones mentioned before, but it’s never to late to start doing it. I’ve been personally taking a tag related approach lately to naming new files and folders, making sure I have the same key tags both in the name of the file and inside the documents (If the contents within are written). Now, searching with Google Desktop for files that have been created taking into consideration this approach is plain sweet. It’s my plan to minimize the quantity of folders and sub-folders I create in my own computer, given the fact that playing the rabbit hole method ended up hiding my own things where I could hardly ever find them.

But let’s leave children’s games aside. I guess we can say that comparing the amount of information inside our own computers and the amount of information inside the Internet is like comparing one panflet with the Library of the US Congress (largest library in the world). If you want to know the real secret to handling all the information in the Net, it doesn’t exist. It’s impossible. So, how can we try to control the information we care about which is in the Internet without having to download and save every relevant web page we find?. The answer is: bookmarks. But not through the obsolete “favorites” tool of your browser of choice, through online bookmarking, social bookmarking. The impact del.icio.us had on web site organization and management through tags, from any computer in the world connected to the Internet, changed the bookmarking game. The real pleasure of searching and finding easily on your first search the one website you saved even years ago, is indescribable. No wonder “favorites” are dead now, and never really worked out when containing large numbers of websites. How easy it has become to manage, search and find thousands of saved websites. I’m getting to 2,000 bookmarks on my own delicious, and keep adding to it on a daily basis.

But enough of this “going out to search and try to find”. With RSS, the game has changed again. True, we will continue to be the ones going to new content somewhere on the web, but with RSS, it can really be the other way around. With RSS, the Internet comes to you. There are a number of online and offline solutions that will retrieve RSS feeds, they are called RSS readers, and they come in all sizes and colors, to put it that way. Netvibes, igoogle or Newsgator just to name a few, are some of the best web based alternatives, but keep an eye on your browser, since most of them come now with a built-in RSS reader. I personally love the RSS reader built into Opera browser. But lately, and due to a temporary period of loss of Internet at home (for a couple of weeks), I susbscribed to my favorite RSS feeds from Outlook, which I use while I’m online at my work. Outlook’s built-in RSS reader seamlessly accumulates RSS feeds during the day while I work and allow me to get home (with or without Internet connection) and be able to consume the feeds. It has proven to be a very good reader that I plan to continue using as complement to my other RSS readers.

Even if you have never subscribed to an RSS feed to “consume” information, if you own a media device like an i-pod, and listen to podcasts that you have subscribed to through i-tunes, it’s thanks to RSS that you are able to receive each new chapter.

Let’s accept it. The organize-search-find game has just started, and as information continues being generated and piled inside our hard drives, and inside the Internet’s hard drives, our challenge to “control” this information will continue to grow. It’s only through these, and other information management technologies and methodologies that we will be able to suceed on this goal of organizing the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful for ourselves and the world. And we haven’t even gotten into semantic search. But that, again, is for another post.

What about you? What organize-search-find methods, tools and/or technologies do you use or recommend? Tell us through the comments section below. Thank you for reporting broken links as well.
